Sonic Youth adalah cikal bakal garage band yang terbentuk di New York City tahun 1981. Formasi Sonic Youth awal adalah Thurston Moore (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Mark Ibold (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums).
